2009 Ft Carson Kids Day Recap

2009 Ft. Carson Kids Fishing Event Recap

For the 4th year of this event, Ft. Carson children, most that have a parent deployed overseas were taken out for a day of fishing on Pueblo Reservoir.  54 children accompanied by 34 parents were taken out on 38 volunteer boats.  Volunteer boaters represented the Colorado Walleye Association, Colorado BASS and Colorado FLW/TBF fishing clubs.  As usual all the kids had to do was show up.  Ft. Carson bused the kids to the reservoir where they were outfitted with all necessary gear…gear they were able to take home after the event.  A special thanks goes out to the event sponsors.  Zebco (rod/reel combos), BAE Systems (lunch), Ferguson Pontiac (t-shirts), Baja Broadband (water/snacks), Colorado Division of Wildlife (hooks/sinkers/bobbers/swivels), Colorado State Parks (access), Balfour Beatty (rounding up the kids/transporting the kids/gear/et al), Coca Cola (water), Macks Lure (lures for the kids) and Outlaw Bait (night crawlers) graciously gave to the kids…without your help we could not hold this event. Unlike previous years the weather was not ideal for comfort, cooler, rainy, breezy weather greeted the kids as they pulled up in buses.  Despite the dreary weather, the kids were excited to fish and for some just to get a first time ride in a boat.  Although not comfortable weather, the fishing was on fire.  Everyone caught fish, most focused on 12-18 feet of water with jigs and crawlers.  New for this year, Kris Spiller (Balfour Beatty) and Mike Garrett (Pikes Peak BASS) held a little competition amongst the kids.  Trophies were given for the “smallest fish”, the “biggest fish”, the “biggest that got away” and “most fish”.   Media coverage:
