Big Mac June 6 & 7, 2009 Tournament recap

Weather:
Friday night right after the rules meeting produced sever Thunder storms and tornado’s surrounding Big Mac with reports of Tornado’s touching down 6 miles South East of Otter Creek.  Some reported returning to a camp without tents due to sever wind later forcing members to seek refuge at local hotels.
Saturday proved to be a better day with a chilly morning in the low 50’s but by 11am the weather took a turn for the better with everyone shedding layers and basking in the sun. Mild winds of <5mph were consistent throughout the day.  After everyone was off the water the evening thunder storms rolled in again and produced a soggy evening.
Sunday started off overcast and cool with a light wind from the North East as an overnight cold front came during the wee hours of the morning.  By 9:30 am light rain created a wet and chilly day on the water.  By weigh in time, the temperature had reached 54 degrees with intermittent misting rain and winds up to 15 mph.

Fishing
The bite on Saturday was good for some anglers with others struggling to catch legal fish to weigh.  Chad Vollmer and Chand Kiefer brought in the big fish of the day at 9.96lbs, which helped them dominate the field and capture first place for the day at 16.15 lbs.  Not much after Chad and Chad’s big fish was measured and weighed,  Bill and Diane Shumaker brought in a 26” 7.81 lb Walleye helping them take 5th place for the day.  Rob and Allen Katz worked to produce a solid basket of Walleye giving them a second place finish for the day at 12.61 lbs.  Ron Hammel and Terry Schleski were not far behind with a 3rd place finish coming in with 9.69 lbs. 
Fishing Saturday seemed to best on Lindy rigs using Leeches.  Some noted worms were working, but the predominate bait producing fish was Leeches.  Best producing areas seemed to be on the West end of the lake in the common areas surrounding Lemoyne and Van’s.  Some reported success on the dam, but the bite was sporadic and slow, but those who were persistent; their hard work paid off.  Pitching jigs, vertical jigging, trolling crank baits and throwing spinner baits produced some fish, but Lindy rigging seemed to be the winning ticket for our tournament leaders on Saturday.

Sunday was a different day than Saturday and with the overnight cold front pushing in, the bite was difficult resulting in only a quarter of the fish being caught than the previous day.  Many anglers faced the same challenge, how to get legal lock-jawed Walleye to bite.  The team of Hannon/Tapp made a last ditch effort for a big fish and reeled up a 13.42 lb walleye with just minutes left to be into the weight station. The fish was caught on a crank bait in an area know for having the potential for large Walleye.  Their 13.42 lb fish was 31” and very healthy and could not have come at a better time during a poor bite.  This one fish put them on top of the leader board, 1st place finish for Sunday and an overall finish of 1st Place.  By not giving up and having a motto of “Don’t give up”, proved to be the difference for the team to earn a 1st place overall win at Big Mac.

Sunday:      20 Walleye Measured and Weighed @ 50.67 lbs
A Total of 103 Walleye Weighed @ 198.31lbs
