2009 Points Tournament 3 RecapFor official details regarding this tournament, please refer to the official tournament page. These results are not official until reviewed by the Tournament Director.
Trinidad Lake July 6 and 7 2009, Trinidad is going through cosmetic changes and construction improvements to the camping area and the changes are outstanding. Although not fully operational while we were down there, the new bath house is taking shape and is set to be completed in August. The electrical has been redone and many of the sites have been dramatically improved. When all is said and done, Trinidad will really set the bar for other State Parks to follow their improvements. Thanks to all the cooperation on behalf of Trinidad State Park, management and their staff for giving the CWA the opportunity to host our tournament at their facility. We can’t wait to see the final improvements to Trinidad State Park. This is one of the cleanest State Parks in the State and is very well maintained, if you missed the tournament, take a trip down and see the new look and dramatic improvements. A special thanks to Canon Marine who was our sponsor for this event. They provide our starter boat; a18’6” 2009 Statos 386 XF powered by a Yamaha 150 and a power trimmed 9.9 kicker, if you are looking for a new boat, stop in, call or look them upon the web (www.canonmarine.com). For CWA member’s special discounts apply, so make sure you mention you are a club member and remember to thank them for their support. Brian was our representative from Canon Marine with over 15 years experience in the boat industry and he provided everyone with technical knowledge, boat troubleshooting and assistance throughout the weekend. Brian got broke in at the weight station both days but this also provided an opportunity to see and meet all the great people we have in the CWA. Thank you Brian and Canon Marine for all your support and assistance, we sincerely appreciate it. Fishing We kicked off the start of the fishing tournament on Saturday at 6:30am. The water was calm and hopes were high. Trinidad is known for producing big fish, but they can be very difficult to locate and catch. The fishing started off fast and furious, the weight station was busy throughout the weekend and anglers reported catching plenty of fish, but the legal fish were tough to come by. Later in the day, anglers were greeted with a T-storm which pushed some anglers off the water due lightning. Everyone got off the water safely but not with a little scare with all the static in the air and fishing rods humming. The T-storms pushed through and the weather cleared just in time for the Saturday night dinner. Our big fish for the day was a 1.97lb Walleye caught by the team of Gene Metschke and Larry Call. The top 10 teams payout for Saturdays weight was tight but things changed on Sunday. Our anglers dialed in Trinidad and found some bigger and healthier fish. The tight race opened up when Ken and Jetty White produce a 10.42lb Walleye. Shortly there after, a few other 5-6lb Walleye tipped the scales on Sunday. Numbers of fish caught and turned in on Sunday were a little less than Saturday, but the quality of fish was far more impressive on Sunday. Overall, anglers were happy with their catch, but the legal fish were still difficult to catch. Anglers had their own fishing style and techniques, but jigging and Lindy Rigging seemed to be the most consistent producer for Trinidad Walleye. Trolling proved to produce our biggest fish of the event, but all other big fish were caught jigging or Liny Rigging. Prime colors seemed to be fairly consistent among our anglers with pink, flo. reds, oranges and blues being top choices. Fishing depth varied from angler to angler and ranged anywhere from 3’ to 24’ of water. Anglers used their confidence and applied their technical expertise to master this lake in a weekend. Congratulations to all our top placing teams and newcomers to our tournament. Trinidad one of the smaller lakes we fish and thanks to everyone for working in tight proximities with one another, working together and respecting everyone’s space. Sportsmanship and respect to fellow anglers goes a long ways, keep this in mind and keep up the good work.
