2006 Ice Breaker Recap
by Dave KooserThe first tournament of the year, the Ice Breaker fortunately required no “ice breaking” as the morning temps were in the mid 40’s. 37 teams were checked in and launched by the official start time of 7:00am. With a lake as small as Cherry Creek, I surely thought turn signals and traffic cops would have been necessary in the “hotter” spots of the lake but everyone seemed to have more than enough space to probe the waters for their dream fish.
About noon the wind really picked up causing the bite to shut off for some but pick up for others. Those using live boat indicated that the bite picked up. For us, the morning and noon bite were the same, no fish. This, despite fishing the lake two of the last three weekends and never catching anything less than 18 inches.
At the end, Kent Sump and Don Hanson weighed 4 fish for 13.98 lbs to take the victory. From my investigation, most of the weighed and bigger fish were caught trolling with more numbers being caught using live bait.
As a side note, at the South Chapter May meeting I disclosed what had been working for me to those who attended the meeting and lo and behold, Robert Hartman caught a 30 inch walleye prefishing the day before the tournament. Roberts (and my team) technique was to troll slowly a Tamale Reef Runner with a 2 ounce snap weight in the middle of the lake. Robert’s fish will almost assuredly guarantee him Big Fish of the Month for May, South Chapter.
Hope to see everyone at Big Mac where the dilemma will be trolling for the early suspended bite or staying in the shallows for the livebait, leech bite…..hummmm….what to do?

Ranger Cup:
The CWA has joined with Ranger this year to augment the winnings for Ranger boat owners who are registered in the Ranger Cup Program. At the Ice Breaker Tournament, Dan and Shandra Stringer, owners of a Mercury powered Ranger 620 VS were presented with an additional $100.00 for placing the highest amongst the other Ranger Cup participants. In addition to the Ranger Cup award, Dan and Shandra placed 5th overall and 1st in the mixed standings. Congratulations to Dan and Shandra.
Said Dave Kooser, CWA President, “when the wind kicked up and other trolling teams were being blown about or had to abandon the trolling presentation, the Stringers in their Ranger 620 were relatively unaffected by the wind and they were able to stay with their program.”
The Ranger Cup program will pay $150.00 per day for our points tournaments, again, to those registered in the Ranger Cup Program.
For more information about the CWA and the Ranger Cup, check out the Ranger Cup section under the tournaments page.
